Claims that the Mormon scriptures contradict each other, and uses Polygamy as the example. Lets look in on this closely.
The Book of Mormon
The Book of Jacob
Chapter 1:15
15 And now it came to pass that the people of Nephi, under the reign of the second king, began to grow hard in their hearts, and indulge themselves somewhat in wicked practices, such as like unto David of old desiring many wives and concubines, and also Solomon, his son.
The Book of Jacob
Chapter 2 : 24
24 Behold, David and Solomon truly had many wives and concubines, which thing was abominable before me, saith the Lord.
And right here we see the problem of our anti-Mormon. He merely proof-texts the issue without regard to context, a rather typical anti-Mormon trick that demonstrates dishonesty. True at this point polygamy was not the command of God. But Jacob 2:30, only a mere 6 more verses of reading (!) says "For if I will, saith the Lord of Hosts, raise up seed unto me, I will command my people; otherwise they shall hearken unto these things." It is so easy as to be embarrassing to critics. God can and does choose when he will have whatever part of his people practice polygamy, and that without sin. If God has NOT commanded it, then at that time people should take only one wife. It does not take a Ph.d to figure this out, it just takes reading another 6 verses for the context. In fact, the next verse clearly demonstrates just this point of ours! We can thank our anti-Mormon critic, dishonest though he is with the Book of Mormon, for showing us this next verse!
The Book of Jacob
Chapter 3 : 5
5 Behold, the Lamanites your brethren, whom ye hate because of their filthiness and the cursing which hath come upon their skins, are more righteous than you; for they have not forgotten the commandment of the Lord, which was given unto our father--that they should have save it were one wife, and concubines they should have none, and there should not be whoredoms committed among them.
Precisely! UNTIL God commands the polygamy issue, they are not to practice it! It is sin if God has said no. If he says yes take more than one wife then it is not a sin. This is so obvious, yet critics will do anything, no matter how blatantly dishonest, to try and make contradictions, when it is their own dishonesty that is demonstrated. Again, the next scripture that he shows also demonstrates out point rather powerfully, in light of the full context the Book of Mormon so correctly, and logically presents...
The Book of Mosiah
Chapter 11 : 2
2 For behold, he did not keep the commandments of God, but he did walk after the desires of his own heart. And he had many wives and concubines. And he did cause his people to commit sin, and do that which was abominable in the sight of the Lord. Yea, and they did commit whoredoms and all manner of wickedness.
Precisely. If God at that time was not commanding Polygamy, then it was sin, as this verse clearly says.
Our critic thinks that the above scriptures contradicts the ones below here..... Let us see.
Doctrine And Covenants
Section 132: 1, 37-39, 61
D&C 132:1
1 Verily, thus saith the Lord unto you my servant Joseph, that inasmuch as you have inquired of my hand to know and understand wherein I, the Lord, justified my servants Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, as also Moses, David and Solomon, my servants, as touching the principle and doctrine of their having many wives and concubines
D&C 132:37
37 Abraham received concubines, and they bore him children; and it was accounted unto him for righteousness, because they were given unto him, and he abode in my law; as Isaac also and Jacob did none other things than that which they were commanded; and because they did none other things than that which they were commanded, they have entered into their exaltation, according to the promises, and sit upon thrones, and are not angels but are gods.
D&C 132:38
38 David also received many wives and concubines, and also Solomon and Moses my servants, as also many others of my servants, from the beginning of creation until this time; and in nothing did they sin save in those things which they received not of me.
D&C 132:39
39 David's wives and concubines were given unto him of me, by the hand of Nathan, my servant, and others of the prophets who had the keys of this power; and in none of these things did he sin against me save in the case of Uriah and his wife; and, therefore he hath fallen from his exaltation, and received his portion; and he shall not inherit them out of the world, for I gave them unto another, saith the Lord.
D&C 132:61
61 And again, as pertaining to the law of the priesthood--if any man espouse a virgin, and desire to espouse another, and the first give her consent, and if he espouse the second, and they are virgins, and have vowed to no other man, then is he justified; he cannot commit adultery for they are given unto him; for he cannot commit adultery with that that belongeth unto him and to no one else.
Notice here that this is precisely correct. There is no contradiction with the Book of Mormon at all. Notice that verse 27 says "...because they were given unto him, and he abode in my law; as Isaac also and Jacob did none other things than that which they were commanded..." When God commands, there is no sin. When he withholds, then man cannot continue the old ways and remain sinless. Of course. That is the point the Lord makes in verse 39 "...and in none of these things did he sin against me save in the case of Uriah and his wife; " (My emphasis)The Lord did NOT give David Uriah's wife, yet David went after her, and therefore fell from his exaltation. What God gives, man shall accept, and take no more! That is unless God gives it. It is God's commands that man is suppose to honor, not man's desires and wishes. If God wants man to practice Polygamy then God will command man to live thus. If God wants man to have only one wife, then God will command man to live thus. These verses only contradict when dishonest anti-Mormons exclude the full context, which they usually do. They want to teach a lesson, unfortunately they certainly DO teach a lesson, but not the one they think they are teaching. As I have said time and again, if critics have to cheat in order to defeat Mormonism, they have NOTHING, absolutely NOTHING to offer in return. I found it interesting that this silly, weak, illogical, and dishonest idiot website attributed this supposedly magnificent discovery of contradictions to Sandra Tanner. Then shame on her for deceiving God's children, and shame on critics for not reading the context of which would take a mere minute longer, and which is so patently obvious DUH!!!
